Donutiazia- Based on a True Obsession

For my birthday (which was a couple of weeks ago) my mom (code name: mummy) threw some cash my way, and decided to leave the gifting for my birthday to me. At that moment, I felt two things:

1. Dang, I have to pick out MY gift for MY birthday for MY mummy. What a drag, what's the point of getting a gift if the giftee already know what it is. I'm not supposed to know what the gift is, it's my birthday!

2. Woah, the fate of my birthday happiness is in my hands...and I work in the most creative place on earth (no, I don't work in Disneyland). I work at Michael's Arts and Crafts, where every item in the store can be worked into your wildest dreams, where the bakery aisles are the sweetest source of inspiration and torment, also where the seasonal items burn a giant hole in my pockets (just wait till Halloween comes, my house is the gaudiest house on the block).

So, I set to work. During my shifts I ran through the aisles, sat in scrapbooking looking at what I could do, ran my fingers over every strung bead, skimmed through a few yarn oriented books, and studied what could be done even in the floral department. Yet, after all the days dawdling, I couldn't come up with the perfect gift I could give myself with mummy's cash.

But then it hit me like a barrel of angry cats.

(Cue the trumpets blaring and the confetti falling from the air)

Pinterest.

The go-to archive for all things crafty and inspirational. Without even thinking twice I looked at my boards, and the one thing I found an abundance of was...food. I now knew that my gift had to be food oriented, because, I love food and I might have been born a foodie from the planet Foodtron next to the moon Pizza Pie.

The next day after my epiphany, I went to work dead bent on buying my gift. Between dealing with rowdy customers, foot long return receipts, and cranky managers, I walked through the bakeware section. Then, I saw it...

GUARDS- Silver Lining

The Babycakes' Donut Maker.

I grabbed the donut maker, sprinted to the register, tossed it on the counter, and screamed with joy. I finally got what I wanted, which was an eternal donut maker from the comfort of my own home. Endless days spent eating donuts only at the price of $19.99 due to my associate discount. The Babycakes' Donut Maker usually runs for $29.99 in Michaels' stores, but with a handy dandy coupon with you, you get sweet savings and an even sweeter donut maker.

Here's what the Babycakes' Donut Maker looks like:

I've been thinking about what kind of donut I should make for weeks after receiving my maker, and I finally decided what kind of delectable donut I was going to make. Thanks to Pinterest, I decided on "French Breakfast Donuts," which has a mouthwatering combination of cinnamon and well seasoned nutmeg:

(The Following Recipe was found on Pinterest, and linked to the blog "Camille Styles")

French Breakfast Donuts Recipe

{What you'll need}

* 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
* 1/2 cup sugar
* 1 1/2 cups flour
* 2 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
* 1/4 teaspoons salt
* 1 egg, beaten
* 1/2 teaspoons nutmeg
* 1/2 cup milk (I used skim milk because that's all my dad buys)

{What you'll need for the delicious donut topping swirl}

* 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
* 1/2 cup sugar
* 1 tablespoon cinnamon

{Instructions}

1. Plug in your Babycakes' Donut Maker, and make sure it's away from your mixing station. You'll know it's ready for use and fully heated when the green light turns on. You don't need to put nonstick cooking spray in the maker because it's nonstick coated already.

2. Mix together the 5 tablespoons of butter and sugar; it helps to melt the butter to aid in effortless mixing. Then, add the egg.

3. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg. Mix well, then add the milk, mix again.

4. Combine your dry ingredients (salt, baking powder, flour, etc.) and the butter and sugar mixture. Mix all of these ingredients together in a bowl, you should notice the delicious swirls of nutmeg, and don't worry that the batter is thick. It's perfectly fine.

5. Get a new bowl, combine 1/2 sugar and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon. Mix well.

6. Get another bowl, place the 3 tablespoons of unsalted melted butter in there.

7. Pour your batter, with a large spoon, into the Donut Maker, you can fill up the holes fully or half way. Although pouring in the batter half way ensures a clean formed donut without excess on the sides.

8. After filling the six donut indents, close, then let cook for 5 minutes.

9. Use the two-pronged fork to pull out your perfectly delectable donuts (can you smell the cinnamon?) place it on the wire cooling rack to chill for a minute.

10. Dunk the top part of your donut into the melted butter, then into the cinnamon and sugar mixture.

11. OOHHH-LA-LA You have instantly cute, mini donuts for dessert, lunch, or breakfast.

Here's the finished product of my donuts:

The donuts are toothsome bite sized treats, with a burst of cinnamon on your tongue. When I bit into mine, it's soft, the cinnamon sugar topping crumbled off my lips and into my lap. Be sure to have a napkin, because I made a bit of a mess. But, the taste was so pleasing. The cinnamon reminded me of the Christmas season, but the undertones of nutmeg brought me back to the pleasant aroma of Fall.

I'm so happy I made these donuts and brought the donut maker! I will certainly be snatching these donuts before I zip off to class tomorrow, and I know these little treats will put an automatic smile on my face during drab lecture classes.

Not unless I bring my donut maker to class, in which case...
